$9 million investment to expand, renovate New Prague cancer center
NEW PRAGUE, Minn. – As part of Mayo Clinic Health System's continuous investment in the New Prague campus, the health system is committing $9 million to expand and renovate the New Prague cancer center beginning in 2024.
"Our plans include creating additional capacity for patients, modernizing the facility, and improving efficiency by bringing the cancer and infusion therapy practices together into a combined location," says James Hebl, M.D., regional vice president, Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota. "We are excited to continue to execute our strategic vision for the New Prague practice by transforming and modernizing the cancer center."
The cancer center project is the second phase of the strategic vision for the campus, building upon a $5 million operating room expansion and the introduction of numerous surgical specialties during phase one.
The number of U.S. patients needing cancer care is expected to grow by nearly 9% in the next five years. The New Prague cancer center provides lifesaving treatment to patients with cancer in communities within many miles of the city.
"The investment in our cancer center will ensure New Prague has the facilities, resources and services it needs to provide the highest-quality care to our growing number of patients, both now and into the future," says Martin Herrmann, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague medical director.
Some of the project's key features will include:
- An integrated and full-service Oncology Department, providing clinical care, chemotherapy, immuno and targeted therapies, genetic counseling, nutrition guidance, social work assistance, and pharmacy support.
- Enhanced patient privacy and accommodations that support infection control.
- Eight infusion therapy bays and two private rooms for a total of 10 beds, which will be used for both cancer and noncancer infusions.
- Five exam rooms for oncology and hematology patients.
- Improved patient flow and wayfinding.
- Dedicated provider office, nurse station and break room.
