Nasal Obstruction Treatment in La Crosse
Nasal obstruction is defined as insufficient airflow through the nose. This condition can occur because of a structural abnormality or swelling in the nasal passages.
Nasal breathing is important as it filters, warms, and adds humidity to the air allowing the lungs to function more effectively.
In addition to being uncomfortable, nasal obstruction can contribute to habitual snoring, chronic headaches, dental decay, bad breath, and poor-quality sleep.
Nasal implant for nasal obstruction
An absorbable nasal implant is a new and minimally invasive treatment option for nasal obstruction caused by internal nasal valve collapse. Internal nasal valve collapse occurs when the nose narrows or closes when breathing through the nose. During the procedure, the nasal implant is inserted into the outside wall of the nose. The implant then dissolves and is replaced by collagen over the course of 18 months.
Know before you go
Prior to treatment, you should discuss any current medications you are taking and your medical history with your physician. Plan for a one-hour appointment and ask your physician if you will need someone to drive you home.
During the treatment
The nasal implant procedure is typically performed right in your doctor’s office with only a local or topical anesthetic. A small tube is inserted just inside the nostril. When the tube’s tip reaches its target, the thin, absorbable implant is placed in its supporting position and the tube is removed.
After treatment
In general, there is minimal downtime and recovery. You may experience temporary symptoms such as mild bruising, inflammation, awareness of the implant and mild pain, but most symptoms typically resolve quickly. Patients experienced no long-term adverse cosmetic changes with the absorbable nasal implant.
Safe and effective
In a clinical study, patients still experienced a reduction in nasal symptoms 2 years after the procedure was performed. Patients reported experiencing:
- Reduced nasal congestion or stuffiness.
- Less trouble breathing through the nose.
- Improved ability to get enough air through the nose during exercise or exertion.
- Reduced nasal blockage or obstruction.
- Less trouble sleeping.
