Programs, Outpatient Services & Education Classes
Adult men residential program
The adult men residential program offers specialized treatment for adult men and their families who are struggling with addiction and a mental health disorder.
Services provided in the program include:
- Individual counseling and group therapy
- 24/7 staffing
- Multidisciplinary treatment team
- Addiction psychiatrist who provides medication management needs and medication-assisted treatment
- Family education and sessions
- Therapeutic recreation
The program has guidelines for all participants to follow. This information outlines what is allowed and what is prohibited while in treatment. Ensure all funding arrangements are in place before admission.
What to bring to treatment:
- A 30-day supply of your prescriptions
- Addresses and phone numbers of people involved in your treatment process
- Appropriate clothing
- Activewear: limit 3
- Long pants, knee-length shorts or skirts: limit 10
- Outerwear appropriate for the season
- Shirts with sleeves (no tank tops): limit 10
- Shoes (sandals allowed if worn with socks): limit 4 pairs
- Sleepwear: limit 3
- Socks and undergarments: no limit
- Swimwear (one-piece only)
- Insurance card
- Personal hygiene products (see list of exclusions in 'what not to bring' section)
- Alcohol must not be listed in the top three ingredients in lotions
- Hairspray must be alcohol-free and aerosol-free
- Mouthwash must be alcohol-free
- Postage stamps
Optional items:
- Individually wrapped candies
- Personal pillow, blanket or comforter
- Pictures (no reference to alcohol, drugs, gangs or sexual activity)
- Unopened packages of cigarettes
Items must be washed upon arrival.
What not to bring to treatment:
- Clothing that includes drug and alcohol references, or offensive or negative writing or graphics
- Drugs or paraphernalia
- Electronics, including camera, cellphone, MP3 player, CD player and CDs, computer and gaming system and video games
- Food, beverages or liquids
- Hair coloring
- Loose tobacco, open packages of nicotine products, electronic cigarettes or vapes
- Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, cologne/body spray/perfume and aftershave
- Valuable jewelry
- Weapons
Additional information:
- Alarm clocks and radios are provided.
- Laundry facilities are available, and detergent and fabric softener are provided. Personal detergents are allowed if approved by the facility and will be stored with staff.

Extended care program
The extended care program offers treatment for adults with chronic, relapsing substance abuse problems or those who are at a high risk for relapse due to the extent of use or types of substances used. The program helps individuals develop relapse prevention skills and become involved in community groups that promote abstinence from alcohol and other drugs while learning skills for healthy living.
Services provided in the program include:
- Individual counseling and group therapy
- Family group counseling and education
- 24/7 staffing
- Daily meditation and relaxation skills training
- Therapeutic recreation
- Assistance with establishing aftercare living arrangements to enhance a substance-free lifestyle
- Extended stays up to 90 days

Outpatient services
Fountain Centers offers a wide range of outpatient alcohol and drug treatment services for adults and adolescents. Treatment plans are individualized to meet the unique needs of each participant. We use evidence-based practices in our treatment programs and incorporate the 12-step recovery principles into our therapy services. These include motivational enhancement and cognitive behavioral traditions with an emphasis on teaching skills to prevent relapse.
These programs include:
- Comprehensive assessments
- Individual counseling and group therapy
- Adolescent programming
- Family education
- Alcohol and drug education
- Cognitive behavior skills therapy
- Transition services
- Relapse track
These services are offered in person and virtually through video appointments in Albert Lea, Austin, Fairmont, Faribault, Mankato, Owatonna and Rochester.
Education classes
We offer several education classes on chemical health and awareness, and substance abuse.
Adolescent chemical health
This class focuses on prevention and intervention and is available to adolescents ages 13 to 17, or older if still enrolled in high school, who are seeking more information on the harmful effects of alcohol, marijuana and nicotine. Referrals to this class can be made by probation officers, social workers and concerned parents.
Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:
- Identify the effects of alcohol, marijuana and tobacco use
- Learn healthy ways to reduce or quit current use of alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco
- Identify positive alternatives to alcohol and drug use
A parent or guardian must accompany the adolescent to the first class to build the adult’s awareness of adolescent substance use, gain resources to help communication with his or her child, and network with other parents and guardians in the community.
This class is offered in Albert Lea
Chemical awareness
This four-hour class addresses the early consequences of drug and alcohol use.
Class topics include:
- Problem identification
- Self-assessment and lifestyle choices and decision-making
- Identifying consequences of driving under the influence of drugs and/or other chemicals
- Negative effects of nicotine
- Exploring personal values
This class is offered in Owatonna.
Substance abuse
This 12-hour class is for people who are starting to experience the consequences of drug and alcohol use.
Class topics include:
- Defining abuse and addiction
- Coping skills
- Self-assessment and lifestyle choices and decision-making
- Personal consequences of use
- Negative effects of drugs, alcohol and nicotine
- Peer and family roles
This class is offered in Owatonna.
