Psychiatry & Psychology
Your primary care team provides care for the whole person — mind and body, and helps your child stay healthy. It's where you go for your child's yearly check-ups or when they're feeling sick or sad.
While your primary care provider helps your child with their overall physical and mental health, you and your child also may be connected with a consultant from Psychiatry & Psychology.
Consultations
A consultant can help your child and your family:
- Create a healthy lifestyle by changing eating and exercise habits, or learning relaxation skills, ways to sleep better and have good friends.
- Manage difficult behaviors, such as tantrums, noncompliance, or angry outbursts. The consultant can help your family make changes in what matters, at any age.
- Communicate with your child's school to develop behavior care plans, if needed.
- Cope with stress, including worries, loss or sadness.
- Improve self-care techniques to manage pain, diabetes, taking medications, learning how to swallow pills and other issues.
Your visit with the consultant will be approximately 15–30 minutes and will focus on a particular problem. After talking with you and your child or teen, the consultant will help you choose your next action steps, which may or may not include a referral for additional Psychiatry & Psychology services. Visits with a consultant are covered by most insurance plans.
