Certain types of urologic conditions, such as urologic cancers, are not completely preventable. However, you can help prevent many other types of urologic conditions, including urinary tract infections and kidney stones, by drinking plenty of water.
Water helps flush out unwanted bacteria. Not drinking enough water can cause urine to become concentrated, which can lead to strong smells or irritate the bladder. It also can cause burning when you urinate and increase your risk of kidney stones.
Most people should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. If you have a history of kidney stones, your health care provider may recommend increasing your water intake and restricting foods rich in oxalates, salt and animal protein. You often may continue eating calcium-rich foods, but you will need to use caution with calcium supplements.
