    Pharmacogenomics

    • Overview
    • Testing
    • Cost and Insurance

    Testing

Pharmacogenomic testing can be performed by providing a small sample of blood or saliva, or collecting a cheek swab for lab testing. Some tests require the sample to be collected at one of our locations, while other samples may be collected at home and mailed.

Testing and consultation is available to established Mayo Clinic Health System patients. For more information, or if you'd like to request pharmacogenomic testing, talk to your primary care provider.

If you are not yet a Mayo Clinic Health System patient, call the Preventive Services Clinic at 507-284-4340 to schedule an appointment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Note that this service is limited to Rochester only.

    Test results

It can take several days to two weeks to receive pharmacogenomic test results. You can access test results through your Patient Online Services account, the Mayo Clinic App or by calling Mayo Clinic's Release of Information Office at 507-284-4594.

It's important to remember that these results are individualized, meaning the report provides a medication list based on your genetic information. These results should not be used to guide medications for others, even family members.

Your provider will review your pharmacogenomic results and discuss any needed medication changes. Do not adjust your medications without talking to your health care provider or pharmacist.

Share your results with all your health care providers as part of your personal health history. If testing is ordered by a Mayo provider, your results can be viewed in your electronic health record.

A person's genetic information does not change. However, testing for additional genes or advances in technology might provide additional information and opportunities for testing in the future.

Not all treatments, tests and services are available at all Mayo Clinic Health System locations. Check with your preferred location in advance.
