Green Initiatives in Eau Claire

Sustainability and green initiatives have changed the way we look at every project. As we work to conserve resources, recycle materials and reduce waste, everything we do incorporates green thinking.
In 2023, Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire received the Greenhealth Emerald Award from Practice Greenhealth. This national organization recognizes health care organizations committed to continuous improvement in sustainability practices and programs.
The Emerald Award recognizes outstanding hospitals from within Partner for Change applicants. The application is designed for health care facilities that have implemented a significant number of environmental programs, and who can demonstrate continuous improvement and expansion of these programs on the path to sustainability. This competitive award, which recognizes the top 20% of applicants, focuses on advanced sustainability programs and exemplary scores in a range of categories.
Eau Claire also received the Greening the Operating Room Recognition Award in 2023, which honors facilities that have made substantial progress in reducing the effects of the surgical environment.
Eau Claire was among the first to receive the Green Business designation from the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce. Businesses submit applications and are selected for recognition based on efforts in recycling, waste prevention, energy and water conservation, as well as environmentally sustainable practices in purchasing, transportation and environmental advocacy among staff.

In 2022, we recycled and reused these items:

- 18.3 tons of computer and electronic waste
- 3.33 tons of ink jet cartridges
- 0.5 tons of lead aprons
- 107 tons of mixed paper
- 10.79 tons of wood pallets
- 3.5 tons of solvent
- 37 tons of mixed metal
- 4.51 tons of recycled or reused medical devices
