Medication Management Services
When taking medications, there is a lot to know about how to take them and their possible side effects. Mayo Clinic Health System offers personalized medication consultations with pharmacists to help ensure you are getting the most from your medications.
Through a pharmacist consultation, we will review your medications and help you understand what each one does. We make sure your medications are right for you and working as they should so you can be as healthy as possible.

Consultations
Consultations include a comprehensive review of all your prescription and nonprescription medications.
We ask you to bring everything you take, including:
- Prescription medications you take by mouth, injection or other routes
- List of medications you may receive in an infusion center
- Over-the-counter drugs
- Vitamins and minerals
- Dietary and herbal supplements
During your visit, you will meet with a pharmacist in a private area. The pharmacist will evaluate each medication and its side effects and check for potential medication interactions and unnecessary dosages. Together, you will discuss why you are taking the medications, how you take them and whether they are working. The pharmacist will also ask about your health goals and any medication concerns you have.
Education is a key part of the consultation and may include:
- How to take each medicine, including the best time and whether to take it with or without food
- How to use medication devices, such as blood glucose meters and inhalers
- Possible side effects and how to reduce them
- Strategies to make taking your medications simpler and easier
- Ways to reduce your medication costs
You will leave the visit with a customized care plan for all the medications and supplements you take. If the pharmacist detects issues, they will work with your healthcare providers to change your medication regimen.
Pharmacogenomic testing
In some cases, your pharmacist may recommend pharmacogenomic testing to help guide your medication use. Pharmacogenomics is the study of how your genes affect your body’s response to medications.
Testing can be used to:
- Adjust the dose of a current medication or recommend a different medication
- Avoid or prevent serious side effects related to certain medications
- Identify a medication or dose most likely to work for you before you take it
Pharmacogenomic testing only applies to certain medications. It does not address all drug side effects, allergies or interactions with other drugs or foods.
