Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of your urinary system, including your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra. Women are at greater risk of developing a urinary tract infection than are men. Infection limited to your bladder can be painful and annoying. However, serious consequences can occur if a urinary tract infection spreads to your kidneys.
Common causes of recurrent urinary tract infections can be attributed to female anatomy, menopause, anatomic abnormalities, sexual activity, diarrhea, incomplete bladder emptying or diabetes. Doctors typically treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics upon a confirmed laboratory test indicating the presence of a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections can be treated by your primary care provider. However, for recurrent urinary tract infections, you may need a consultation with the urology team.
